Thanks to its convenient geographical location and excellent transportation network, Fontana is also home to railroad and trucking operations, a number of medium to heavy industrial facilities, and several warehousing distribution centers. Being at the junction of the 15 freeway with the 210, 10 and 60 freeways provides easy access to Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix and much more.
Fontana encompasses an area of 56 square miles and offers a wonderful variety of outdoor activities. The city features 39 park recreation locations including Sierra Lakes Golf Course. And with easy access to the beach and the mountains, there is plenty to see and do.
The Performing Arts Center offers musicals as well as dance and theater performances. The Mary Vagle Science and Nature Center provides displays and hiking trails as well as a protected habitat for local wildlife.
The city is served by the Fontana Unified School District, a 35-school district providing instruction from preschool to high school. Many colleges and universities surround the area including Chaffey Community College, San Bernardino Valley College, Riverside Community College, California State University at San Bernardino, the University of California at Riverside and the University of Redlands.
Portions of Fontana's Foothill Boulevard are reminiscent of the migration of Americans seeking relief from the Midwestern dust bowl during the Great Depression. Locations such as The Wigwam Motel and Bono's Deli on the famous Route 66 are reminders of times gone by.
The annual Fontana Days celebration is a tradition that dates back to 1913. The event brings residents together to enjoy four days of fun with a parade, car show, Hen Derby, carnival and wide spectrum of tasty treats. The parade is the highlight of the event. It features local school bands, drill teams and tall flags, and involves the entire community. A Half Marathon and 5K Run Race Walk is held before the parade and is touted as being the world's fastest half marathon. The city had its 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 22, 2002.
North Fontana is home to many master-planned communities such as Summit Heights, Walnut Village, Sierra Lakes, The Landings, Independence, The Village of Heritage and Rancho Fontana. The new growth of Fontana has brought an array of business and shopping areas, making it an affordable community to live, work and play.
